There are days when you simply cannot be strong. You wake up, look around, and for a moment forget that life has changed, then reality comes rushing back. You remember the person who is no longer there, the conversation you can never have again, the plans that will never happen, and the emptiness that words cannot adequately describe. On days like these, please remember this: you do not have to pretend that you are okay.

You do not have to smile when your heart is breaking. You do not have to explain your tears. You do not have to convince everyone that you have moved on simply because they think you should. Sometimes, strength is not getting out of bed with a smile and conquering the world. Sometimes, strength is simply getting through the day. Sometimes, it is saying, “Today hurts, and I need to be gentle with myself.”

There will be moments when something unexpectedly brings them back to you, a song, a familiar voice, a photograph, a place, a scent, or even an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. For a few seconds, you may forget they are gone, and then the pain returns all over again. Do not punish yourself for that moment. Love does not disappear simply because someone is no longer physically present. Missing them is not a sign that you are failing to heal; it is a sign that they mattered.

And please, do not compare your grief with anyone else’s. Someone may think you should be “over it” by now, but they did not live your memories, share your love, or experience your loss. There is no calendar for heartbreak. You are allowed to heal slowly. You are allowed to have good days and bad days. You are allowed to laugh again without feeling guilty, and you are allowed to cry again without feeling ashamed.

One day, you may discover that the pain has changed. It may not disappear completely, but it may become softer. You may think of them and smile before you cry. You may begin making plans again. You may laugh from your heart and realize, perhaps for the first time, that you are still capable of joy. That does not mean you have forgotten them. It means you have learned how to carry their memory without allowing the loss to take everything else from you.

So, if today is one of those difficult days, breathe. Put down the pressure to be okay. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you feel. Rest if you need to. Cry if you need to. Reach out if you need someone. And if all you managed to do today was survive, let that be enough. Tomorrow will ask something different of you. But today, you don’t have to be strong. Today, you just have to be here.
